Week 10 - Basic Anatomy & movement

This first image was done in six 15 second stages to draw each figure moving, only the top half of the body moved while the legs stayed in place, charcoal sticks were used to quickly draw the images because the first image the figure moved every 15 seconds and the second image below the figure moved continuously in a slow motion. each figure has nice posture holding the pole in different positions, they have balance and the last figure that is leaning the most uses the pole to balance. a problem with this drawing are the figures standing slightly slanted 

this second image took around one minute forty-five seconds doing the same technique with charcoal sticks, the figures weren't positioned in the rule of thirds as the figure was continuously moving, the proportions of the figures aren't perfect as they were done in 10 seconds each figure, each figure has balance when they stand and sat down, near the end the figures on the left seems to be floating instead of standing on the floor.

15 minute drawing taking a look at anatomy the figure was sat upright using the buttocks to balance, we see some muscle but not much detail in this area, the face is not in much detail and the proportions could be better but there is a little for-shortening on the feet and the buttocks squish on the tables because of the pose. 

Week 9 - Directed Study Figure Drawings

To make these 3 drawings they took 1 hour, a 2b pencil was used to make the figure drawings, all of the three poses have an ok balance, there isn't much facial features on the figures but they work well. all three figures have a nice central mass as all of them have there shoulders supported by the feet. all three figures have nice internal angles.
the second figure has nice proportions apart from the legs look a bit wide compared to her body and the line from the chin to the ear looks a little dark. the third drawing at the bottom has nice proportions as well but the left fingers dont look like a fist instead it looks like she is wearing a glove.

the first top left drawing doesn't have the right proportions everywhere because she was measured by nine heads, she doesnt look like shes standing up straight because there was no line draw vertically down the middle, the arms and legs also look disconnected and her shoulders look flat instead of curved like in the second and third figure drawing.

Week 8 - Still Life Reflective Surfaces

This drawing took 40 minutes to make, it was made with 3 pastels (white, red and black) the white and black were used to make reflective surfaces and grey by mixing the two colours together, the two focal points (left and right cone) both sit on the rule of thirds. The cones have nice reflectivity on them bouncing from the right cone to the right side of the left cone making them bounce off each other.


The image has shadows casting from both the cones, one with a hint of red on the red paper and the other on both the red paper and the reflective surface, there is also shading in the hole in both the cones and a terminator line going from top to bottom in the middle of both the cones.

after adding reflectivity to the image it now looks much better than before but the reflective surface still doesn't look parallel.

Week 7 - Texturing

This image was made by using a 4B pencil, it took 45 minutes to draw, it was quickly sketched out first then more detail was added later. the texturing/shading and the cones look like there behind each other and behind the creases in the table instead of them looking like there kissing, they are nicely positioned on the table from this angle.

The focal point is the standing up cone behind the creases in the table, as there is darker shading and light reflections in that cone, and it sits in the rule of thirds so the viewer should notice it first then see the second cone then follow the table back around to the cone. The problem with this drawing is there is not enough shading in the table as there should of been.

Week 5 - Landscape Drawing

This drawing was made from six different colours one of which wasn''t in the landscape but it went well with the photo (a dark purple colour), this landscape drawing took 1 hour to make, it was made with coloured pastels, the image wasn't made by drawing the outer edges it was made by drawing loads of little lines and curved lines to make the trees/brushes.

the rule of thirds was used by putting more detail in the bottom left bushes than the other bushes and there was more detail added in the top right of the tree where both my focal points are,the eye can move around the page by starting at the bottom left of the image and going up both the trees then back down again on the right hand side of the image.

the main fault with this image is there are small white gaps behind the bits drawn but if coloured paper was used instead then it wouldn't of been noticed as much, there is also quite a bit of smudging going on to try and cover the white gaps.

Week 4 - Light and Shade

I made both these images in 1 hour or so the first image is testing out different shading techniques and how dark/light the shading needs to be and what happens to the shading when the light reflects off objects/ceiling/walls etc and trying the terminator line, The second image I tried to put together the techniques I used on the last image to create this one, I quickly planned it out on the page which was wrong at first because it made it too high so I came back and made it shorter afterwards

The vantage point I choose for the second image was one I liked as the cloth went through the chair and you could see the back of the cloth behind the chair so there was nice dark spots/shading underneath the cloth.
the second images focal point is the left side of the drapery and the shading underneath it which sits into the rule of thirds.

The image would be better if it had a background as it looks like its floating, the shading was nice as it was darker underneath the cloth but lighter at the top from the sunlight hitting the top right of the image where there weren't much shading, then going to the left of the image as the shading got darker.

Week 6 - Still Life

I made a pencil and a coloured version of this drawing, this one I coloured without making any lines to follow I just drew loads of little lines to make the objects on the table, it took around 25-30 minutes to make the drawing.the image was made up from about 6 colours this way the image wouldn't be mixed of loads of colours it just makes it simpler and easier for the eye to see.

I started off with making the big copper vase at the top of the image and using that for an estimated scale of the rest of the objects, I then started making loads of lines to make the objects and lastly added the green cloth they are sitting on.

probably the biggest problem with this image is the vase on the right it looks like its attached to the green cloth when it was behind a crease in the table, also the green cloth doesn't look like a nice circle.

Week 3 - Landscape Composition

This drawing took me around 40 minutes to sketch, the main focal point is the trees near the front, the hill and the bit at the top right just past the hill, everything else was mainly quick scribbles.
I used the rule of thirds by having the joint together tree in the bottom left and the paths behind the hill/paths at the top right of the image, i tried to make the eye follow from the bottom left going around the trees up to the top right of the image then coming back around the hill.

the scale of the people aren't right because the people are half the size of the tree in the image which I noticed after making the drawing, I don't think I got the perspective right it looks like i'm looking at it from a higher perspective when I was standing on the floor.

Week 2 - Landscape Line and Perspective

This is the first time I've tried to draw anything like this it took me around one hour and thirty minutes to draw this building, I tried to draw it from my perspective which at the time I was looking up at a tall building on campus, there are quite a few mistakes like the windows are not vertical because from my perspective I thought they were at an angle but they weren't, the whole building also didn't fit into the page because it was drawn too big so maybe thinking more about proportion would help a lot.

the image was drawn from the horizon line, it was placed in the middle of the page instead of off to the side a bit and maybe putting detail into the rule of thirds which also wasn't added, the image doesn't have a focal point or a background/floor which would stop it from looking like its floating.

Week 1 Observational Drawing

In week one we practised drawing by doing different drawing techniques that make an object like drawing curves, lines, triangles, circles, cubes etc these lines were then used to make all the other drawings for each week. we used perspective drawing by drawing a box while sat down and somehow its placed on the rule of  thirds, this image has some shading at the back as the light hits the front of the box. the image does look like its floating though it could do with a floor, table or something.
